What is Horehound?

Let’s begin by taking a closer look at the plant that is going to make you feel better.

Horehound (marrubium vulgare in Latin), is a perennial herb, a member of the mint family that is native to Britain, growing lightly in the rest of Europe and western Asia. It can also be found in meadow growing in the United States and Canada.

This bush grows to a height of 25-45cm (approx. 10-18 inches) tall. Horehound has wrinkled leaves, about 2-5cm long (approx. 0.8-2 inches), green in color and with dense white hairs.

The leaves are the most important part of the plant, it is where the health benefits of horehound reside.

Second to the leaves come the beautiful clusters of tiny white flowers that grow on the upper part of the stem. These also have health benefits, but are not as great as the leaves themselves.

In History...

This plant is known both as Common Horehound and as White Horehound. It is said that the word horehound itself comes from the name of the Egyptian god Horus, who was the god of light and bore the head of a hawk.

As a result, the plant was once called by the Egyptian priests as "Seed of Horus”, "Eye of the Star” and even "Bull’s Blood”. It was used to ward off unwanted magic spells that revealed themselves in the form of disease.

In ancient Rome, it was used as an antidote, helping to cure such ailments as poisons, snakebites and cases of rabies.

Finally, horehound was even cultivated for the production of beer. Today it can be found growing in gardens still being valued for its menthol-like flavor and loved for the many health benefits it provides either in tea form, lozenges or in syrups.
